Circularly Speaking of God in the Box

September 23, 2008

It is difficult to avoid circular arguments — and perhaps even more difficult to avoid arguments which appear circular but are not, based upon the deeper spiritual definitions carried in simple terms scattered throughout Scripture. As Christians, we go to Scripture to learn more of God and how to love Him and be closer to Him. Spending time there allows communication as the Holy Spirit, our promised guide, teacher, and comforter works into us a deeper understanding of the simplicity of the messages. In what may appear an oxymoronic fashion, we must understand the complexity to get to the simplicity. This could be a byproduct of many years of intellectualizing simple truths. Because the words can honestly and truly mean more than one thing correctly, linguistics is almost guaranteed to become a problem when attempting to define something as basic as “good”.

Throughout many glorious episodes of Scripture, God proves that His hands are not nearly as bound as humans perceive them to be – when they choose to follow directions and cooperate with Him. My God is not a small one in a ‘Biggie Size’ container. And, if He is the author of all, promising that all good things come from Him, as well as the promise in Romans 8:28 that He WILL bring good from all things, we must remember that we look at life from a very small place with many obstructions to the larger view. I like my God ‘Biggie Size’ – no box, please.
